Yashi Brown – Musician, Poet, Speaker and Author

Yashi Brown is an author, poet, speaker, and active leader in the mental health community. Poetry became a safe space when she began experiencing severe emotional challenges in her late teens. Her recent book of poems, Black Daisy in a White Limousine, expresses with imaginative detail her emotions, mental health challenges, dreams, and passions.

Recently, she’s become an avid mental health advocate successfully living with bipolar type I and has interviewed with prominent news outlets and print publications including TODAY Show, CNN (Insession), CBS, ABC News and Ebony/Jet publications. Her focus is healing self-imposed stigma as a vehicle to eradicate social stigma.

In 2011, Yashi became a national ambassador for the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), the largest grassroots mental health advocacy organization in the country and today consults and works closely on the Campaign to Change Direction, spearheaded and created by Give an Hour founder, Dr. Barbara Van Dahlen. The Campaign is the most aggressive of its kind endorsed by former First Lady, Michelle Obama, former Second Lady, Jill Biden, and has been incorporated in major cities around the United States including Los Angeles and Washington DC.

Yashi is especially passionate about conducting poetry workshops for psychiatric forensic patients through her foundation project, People of Poetry (POP), and is currently completing the music and audio re-release of her poetry book, “Black Daisy in a White Limousine”.

Her triumphant journey demonstrates how a support system of family, friends, treatment, poetry, and her strong spirituality are the keys to her success.
